LuFu Entry Judging Criteria

Judging criteria for entries is based on innovative, forward-thinking, and impactful contributions towards the future of lighting design. These criteria aim to honour and promote various ecological, economic, social and technical requirements while addressing important global issues. 

While the listed criteria provide an orientation framework and basis for judging, we note that they are not all applicable to every entry. Therefore, entrants must carefully select only those criteria under which their idea/ project/person is most suitable for judging. The most suitable and relevant criteria should be addressed and used as guidelines for preparing the entry.

Specific Criteria: 

  • Environmental or Social Stewardship – How well has the idea/project/ person addressed environmental or social issues through lighting design? (e.g., circular economy, dark-sky preservation, diversity and social inclusion, eco-friendly and renewable energy) 
  • Health and Well-being – How well has the idea/project/person considered/ safeguarded or enhanced health and well-being through lighting design? (e.g., circadian entrainment, sleep enhancement, remedial health treatment and light therapy, etc,)
  • Innovation – How well has the idea/project/person challenged industry norms through blue sky thinking? (e.g., imaginative use of regulations, development of potential new standards) 
  • Technological Advancement – How well has the idea/project/person integrated futuristic technologies through lighting design? (e.g., new/ creative use of smart applications, IoT or AI) 
  • Professional Excellence – How well has the idea/project/person raised the standard of the lighting design profession? (e.g. appreciation from allied and scientific fields like architecture, engineering or medicine) 
  • User Experience – How well has the idea/project/person created a unique experience for users through lighting design? (e.g., emotional quotient, ergonomics/physical comfort)

Overall Criteria:

  • Inclusivity and Diversity — LuFu encourages entries that represent a diverse range of perspectives, backgrounds, and geographical locations to ensure global inclusivity
  • Impact and Significance — LuFu encourages entries based on their potential or actual impact towards shaping the future of lighting design, addressing global challenges, and advancing the industry.

LuFu Judging System for submissions

The judging system for entries will consist of a mark allocation that will determine how well the idea/project/person meets the judging criteria.

Written Descriptions

Each submission should provide a series of written descriptions based on the applicable criteria you select that will be used during the judging, plus a “headline” description designed to catch the attention of our judges and make them want to look further. These descriptions may also be used as promotional materials in case the entry is selected for the final award. Entrants are also requested to submit a short video describing their entry.

  • Headline Description – entrants should provide a broad overview of the different criteria met by the idea/project/person and be limited to 280 characters. If the idea/project/person meets only one or two of the many criteria, the description should provide an overview of only those criteria. 
  • Criteria Description – entrants should provide a detailed description of the relevant criteria met by the idea/project/person and each one should be limited to 280 characters. If the idea/project/person meets only one or two of the many criteria, entrants should provide a detailed description of only those criteria.

Videos

Entrants should provide an approximately 2 minute long video which should be a person speaking about the entry and identifying the key points of the submission. The video will also help assess someone’s capability to present in front of a live audience.

Supplementary images or videos

Submissions should be supported by images and may be complemented further with video’s if relevant. A minimum of four images and a maximum of ten images in total is allowed for a single entry. All images must only be in JPG/JPEG file formats and at least 1200px wide on the shortest side. Supporting videos should be in MP4 format and limited to a target maximum length of 2 mins.

It is expected that there will be a difference in the type of images for ideas and projects:

  • Idea images – entrants should provide visualisations, hand-drawn sketches, isometric views, measured drawings or realistic computer renders of the product or project that must be a clear and valid representation of the idea.
  • Project images – entrants should provide photographs of the realised product or project that must be a clear and valid representation of the project. While professional photographs are highly recommended, actual product or project photographs should not be digitally altered for sharpness, exposure, colour, etc. in such a way it does not reflect the actual reality. Any overly manipulated or modified photographs might be removed from the entry or may even lead to the complete disqualification of the entry.
  • People images – entrants should provide at least one head-shoulders profile photograph/s of the person alongside any other images that justify the entrants nomination.

Preparation List

  1. Social media handles 
  2. Headline description of your project, idea or person limited to 280 characters.
  3. A description of up to 280 characters for each of the relevant judging criteria.
  4. A minimum of four (4) images are required to support your entry up to a maximum of ten (10) images in total is allowed for a single idea, project or people entry. All images must only be in JPG/JPEG file formats and at least 1200 pixels wide on the shortest side.  Please use meaningful file names consisting of “entrytitle_detail.jpg”
  5. Entrants must provide a maximum 2 minute-long video which should be a person speaking about the entry and identifying the key points of the submission. The video will also help assess the entrants capability to present in front of a live audience.

LuFu Terms & Conditions

Responsibility for materials submitted

  • Entrants are responsible for the legality, originality, and copyright of the work submitted in their name.
  • All submissions should be in English. Video submissions can be in the entrants’ native languages with appropriate subtitles in English.
  • By submitting their work, entrants agree that they will not upload and / or distribute any document which is confidential, defamatory, obscene, breaking personal privacy regulations, infringing copyright and intellectual property rights, violating legal rights of any party or proprietary to a brand, an individual or a company (except for the person submitting the work in his/her/their name). LuFu reserves the right to delete any offending material and remove the entries.
  • Entrants submitting their work through the website cannot use false contact information details or identifying details, impersonating any person in order to mislead the organisers. 
  • By submitting an entry, entrants grant a non-exclusive permission to LuFu to use their name, entrants’ image and details of the work submitted for publicity and marketing purposes. Entrants will be given full credit wherever possible. Example usages include articles in newspapers / magazines / websites / social media posts / blogs; printed materials at the ceremonies; prints at specific exhibitions; projected and on-screen visuals at specific ceremonies; videos and photos displaying winners; related case studies, books and presentations. 
  • Entrants keep full ownership of the work itself and the organisers will always seek their permission about any licensable activity outside the scope described above.
  • No responsibility can be taken for entries that are lost, delayed, corrupted, damaged, misdirected or incomplete or which cannot be delivered for any technical reason. Proof of submission will not be accepted as proof of receipt.

We publish your work

When you submit an entry, you are granting LuFu a worldwide and universal license to promote, publish, reproduce, use, host, store, and modify (changes may be required so your content works with our sizing and other constraints), show to the public, and to be shared by followers of LuFu or associated services. This license you allocate to LuFu includes publishing in digital, print, 3D, holographic or any other form of publishing. This right to publish does not stop if you stop using our services (once it's out there, there is no turning back as per the nature of publishing). You are responsible for having the permission to license any content submitted to LuFu.

Other requirements

Entrants of all winning entries are required to travel to China on the relevant dates for presenting their entries at the main event. Travel sponsorships along with a trophy/medal will be provided for all winning entries. However, this does not include any monetary compensation or prize. For a winning entry by a group or an organisation, only ONE (1) person will be sponsored to travel and represent the group or organisation.

Copyright of all user-created content submitted remains the property of the creator. Except where indicated otherwise, all copyright and other rights that exist in the home page and in the sub-domain pages of the website are owned by LuFu. The website, all content and information not submitted by entrants remains the property of LuFu and may not be reproduced without authority from LuFu.
  • LuFu reserves the right to change the legal notices at any time without notice. Please revisit the legal notices if you want to stay up to date with any and all changes over time.

Copyright warning

It is a strong condition of use that you do not copy any content and data from the website without our permission. This includes but is not limited to website screenshots, website descriptions, designer information, article images or text, or any and all content. Doing so will be in clear breach of copyright and legal action may be invoked with the issue passed on to Google and the hosting company of the offending site.
